Fabio Chiarelotto has been the guiding hand at the helm of Montepeloso since 1999. He holds a doctorate in history and is an ardent perfectionist. From the very beginning, he has pursued the same goal in both winery and vineyard: to develop the full potential of the terroir with unwavering determination, while disregarding the fleeting trends in the winegrowing industry and the markets. Pursuit of this goal involved replanting, grafting, strictly limiting yields and optimizing the production processes. Montepeloso lies in the Maremma region of Tuscany, set back from the Tyrrhenian coast and close to the mediaeval town of Suvereto. Val di Cornia, which was awarded DOC status in 1989 followed by the DOCG appellation in 2011, is at a historical meeting point of Roman and Etruscan settlement and culture. The Etruscan settlement of Populonia lies just to the south of the vineyard, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti. To the north lies Bolgheri, which is renowned for its fine wines. A QUO is Montepeloso's fresh young high-flier. The wine, characterized by early accessibility, is made using grapes from the more recent plantings which already epitomize the distinctive qualities of Montepeloso.
