Grape: Gruner Veltliner
Region: Wagram, Austria
Farming: Organic
The Söllner family has tended their farm in the Wagram for four generations. After WWI, great-grandmother Maria Söllner took over the farm, and it continued to grow under subsequent generations, including Franziska, Anton III, and later Anton IV and Margareta Söllner. Toni Söllner, farm-raised, produced his first wine at age 16 in 1989, setting the stage for his winemaking career. By 1995, Toni partnered with Daniela Vigne (from the Wachau) and they began organic farming. In 2004, they adopted full biodynamic practices, using composts, herbal preparations, and promoting biodiversity in the vineyards. Today they manage around 16 ha of vineyards, 40 ha of farmland, plus orchards and woodlands, supporting a full mixed-farming ecosystem with sheep, chickens, and cover crops. There is mixed agriculture: wheat, legumes, sunflowers, livestock—all integrated to create compost, encourage soil life, and maintain ecological harmony. Vineyards are planted predominantly with Grüner Veltliner, Roter Veltliner, Riesling, plus small quantities of red varieties. They also converted an old village shop into a guesthouse and maintain a biodiverse, community-oriented ethos. A true example of bio-pioneering in Wagram since the mid‑’90s, they practice transparent, grounded winegrowing—not “hands-off” natural wine, but a respectful blend of nature and craftsmanship.
