Erich Berg’s journey into winemaking is as rich and varied as the wines he creates. After a vibrant career in Chicago’s fine-dining scene, Erich moved to Oregon in 2004 with a singular goal: to master the art of winemaking. His first harvest at the esteemed Domaine Serene set the stage, where he honed his skills in a setting renowned for its high standards and rigorous expectations. However, a challenging turn came when Erich needed reconstructive hip surgery after three years at Domaine Serene. This life-altering event shifted his path from winemaking to academia. During his recovery, Erich earned a Master’s degree and spent six fulfilling years as a high school English teacher. Yet, the call of winemaking proved irresistible.
A fortunate connection with his friend Brad, owner of Illahe Vineyards, led Erich to a new chapter as Associate Winemaker. There, he delved into crafting low-intervention, terroir-driven wines, further enriching his winemaking expertise. His journey continued at Day Wines, a trailblazer in Oregon’s Natural Wine movement. In 2018, Erich embraced a new adventure by founding Ricochet Wine Company. Starting with just two tons of grapes—Pinot Noir and Grüner Veltliner—Erich had no intention of Ricochet becoming a “real” winery. He was making wine for himself, for his friends and family. But then some friends in the restaurant industry took to the Gruner, and then the Pinot Noir. With encouragement, labels were made, and Ricochet was born.
